Power differences

Power differences in relationships, such as those between a boss and employee, case manager and client, or provider and patient, can significantly impact an individual’s ability to exercise choice and voice. These power dynamics often create situations where it becomes difficult for individuals to assert themselves, whether by saying “no” or making a request. The imbalance can lead to feelings of discomfort or fear, making it harder for some people to communicate their needs, desires, or boundaries effectively. Recognising these challenges is crucial in fostering an environment where individuals feel empowered to speak up and make decisions about their own lives.

Why choose to make a request and not a demand?

    • A true request increases the likelihood that the other person will experience choice in their response.
    • Builds trust that everyone’s needs matter
    • When everyone’s needs matter, people usually have more willingness to support one another in getting everyone’s needs met.
