Scenario 1

A 12-year-old confides in a family member that they’ve encountered disturbing and inappropriate content online. They didn’t feel comfortable asking for help at school because the teachers had repeatedly told them they shouldn’t be using the internet and often expressed frustration with students. Some staff had also been overheard discussing how students were “looking for trouble” by not following the guidelines.

Let’s reflect

  • 1. What victim blaming language or behaviours can you identify in this scenario?
  • 2. How could you respond to the victim blaming language or behaviours displayed in this scenario?
