Language used in policy

Language policy plays a critical role in shaping how service providers communicate with individuals seeking support. When trauma-informed language is integrated into policy, it sets a clear standard for respectful and supportive communication.

Policies that incorporate trauma-informed principles ensure that language is used to promote safety, trust, and empowerment. However, if policies are outdated or fail to reflect current understanding of trauma, they can inadvertently cause harm.

For example, using language that reinforces victim-blaming or fails to acknowledge the complexities of trauma can undermine the support system, making it harder for individuals to trust or engage with services.
