Purpose

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of trauma-informed communication, equipping professionals with the knowledge and skills to engage with survivors of trauma in a non-judgemental, supportive, and effective manner.

It is designed for professionals, caregivers, and organisations working with survivors of abuse, exploitation, or other traumatic experiences. The module explores key aspects of trauma-informed communication, including appropriate language use, non-verbal communication, de-escalation strategies, and organisational policies.

By the end of this module, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the principles of trauma-informed communication and their importance in supporting survivors.
  • Recognise and avoid victim-blaming language, replacing it with empowering and supportive communication.
  • Identify the impact of language on survivors’ recovery, resilience, and empowerment.
  • Adapt communication approaches to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment.
  • Apply trauma-informed techniques in professional settings to build trust, reduce harm, and foster positive engagement with survivors.

This module reinforces the importance of language in shaping perceptions and experiences, ensuring that interactions with survivors are rooted in empathy, respect, and an understanding of trauma’s lasting impact.
